Creatine and HMB: Why Taking Them Together Works

Creatine is one of the most researched supplements in sports nutrition. It works. But it only does one job.

If you're already taking creatine, the question isn't whether it's effective. It's whether it's covering everything your training demands. For most people, it isn't. That's where HMB comes in.

What creatine does

Creatine helps your muscles regenerate ATP, the energy source for short, intense efforts. More available energy means more reps, more power, and more training volume over time.

The researched daily dose is 3–5g of creatine monohydrate. Loading isn't required. Daily consistency gets you to the same place.

Creatine's job is output: helping you train harder.

What HMB does

HMB is a compound your body makes from the amino acid leucine. It's studied for its role in slowing muscle protein breakdown and supporting recovery.

HMB's job is protection: helping you keep the muscle that training builds.

Two ingredients, two pathways

This is the key point. Creatine and HMB don't compete or overlap. They work on different sides of the same problem.

Training is a cycle: you stress the muscle, it breaks down, and it rebuilds stronger. Creatine helps you push harder in the session. HMB helps with what happens after.

What does research say about combining them?

Several studies have looked at creatine and HMB taken together. A 2001 study by Jówko and colleagues found that people taking both gained more lean mass and strength over three weeks of training than those taking either one alone. That study used 3g of HMB per day in men who were new to weight training.

Research on the combination is still limited. A later study in collegiate rugby players found that adding HMB to creatine didn't improve results over a season, so the strongest evidence is in people newer to training. The rationale is straightforward: two ingredients working on two different mechanisms can cover more ground than one.

How to take creatine and HMB

  • Dose: 5g creatine monohydrate and 1.5g HMB daily

  • Timing: Whenever it fits your routine. Daily consistency matters more than the exact hour.

  • Loading: Not needed

  • Cycling: Not needed

  • Mix with: 8–12oz of water or your favorite drink

Or skip the measuring. CHAMA puts 5g of creatine monohydrate and 1.5g of HMB in one scoop.

Why CHAMA

CHAMA was built by two-division UFC Champion Alex Pereira for athletes who can't afford to lose what they've earned. Every batch is TruShield Certified, tested by an independent third party for purity, potency, and banned substances.

Creatine builds it. HMB keeps it.

FAQ

Can you take creatine and HMB together? Yes. They work on different pathways, and research has studied them together.

Does HMB replace creatine? No. Creatine supports strength and power output. HMB helps slow muscle breakdown. They do different jobs.

Will creatine and HMB make me gain weight? Creatine can cause a small increase in water weight inside the muscle, especially early on. That's normal and not fat gain.
